Cellophane Night? The name was meant to shock, says the enigmatic maestro of the Palais Royal - even if what it alludes to is simply the material used to wrap bouquets in the shops. At first sniff, you might think Serge Lutens has gone traditional. Nuit de Cellophane is undeniably a fruity floral drowned in a cloud of mischievous musk. But sniff closer and the light night music that permeates Lutens's works makes itself felt: mandarin warmed by the sunny softness of myrrh drowns jasmine in sunset tones. A light, minty whiff betrays a wandering tuberose. Chinese osmanthus with its sweetness and juiciness and leather-like facets is offset by the warmth of clove and lush, milky almonds. A touch of lily adds smokiness to the mix, mixing the base of sandalwood drowned in honey.
