"At the age of fourteen, Serge Lutens began his apprenticeship at a prestigious hairdresser in Lille, a period he himself defined as crucial to his idea of beauty. In 1962 he moved to Paris, where he was hired by Vogue magazine to create make-up and hair styles, and it was during this period that he worked alongside great photographers such as Richard Avedon, Bob Richardson and Irving Penn. In 1967, Christian Dior commissioned Lutens to create a new line of cosmetics, defined by American Vogue as "revolutionary".
In 1973, a collection of his photographs was exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and in other museums around the world. Seven years later, he was hired by Shiseido to promote the brand's name throughout the world. His advertising campaigns for Shiseido earned him two Golden Lions in the Cannes Film Festival's section for advertising shorts.
In 1982, Lutens created the perfume Nombre Noire for Shiseido, which won the Grand Prix at the UNESCO-sponsored International Art Film Festival in 1990. In the early 1990s, he created and designed the famous perfume house Les Salons du Palais Royal. In 2000, he launched his own fragrance brand ""Parfums - Beaute Serge Lutens"" and for four consecutive years, from 2001 to 2004, he was awarded the FiFi Award."
